List Points / Export

This option lists points from the database, either to the screen, or to ASCII text files for the internal transfer of points to another Geoida job or for export to other systems. In addition, a coordinate transformation may be applied to the listed or exported data, and the Modify function allows any listed point to be selected for editing.

The List Points window is displayed when this option is selected.

Figure 1: List Points-Export option

More Info:

When Geoida is running, details of the purpose and use of each control in this window will be displayed in the bottom panel when the mouse is passed over any active object.

A number of different formats and combinations of data types are possible, which will become apparent by examination of the options available within the List Points window. Listing to Screen or to Internal or Export files allows only one horizontal coordinate type and one height value type at a time, whereas Report format permits any combinations; all possibilities are subject to the current job configuration and (if applied) transformation settings, and whether or not particular options are applicable to the job. The data is always listed to the screen regardless of the output selected and is displayed in the format and column order that will be listed to any output file, except that header lines are not shown.

Sorting - Point listings, to both screen and file, are initially sorted in ascending point number order. To sort the displayed on-screen information by another column type, click once on the header of the column to be sorted; click the same column a second time to sort in the opposite order. Sorting applies to screen listing only - it does not apply to file lists.

Coordinate formats - Variations to the coordinate formats may be selected for Export and Report files. For Easting and Northing output, click the appropriate radio button to select E, N order (default) or N, E order. For Latitude / Longitude lists, there are four formats available as follows :

Format Explanation Example
d°m's" Fully-annotated S37°57'09.1288"
d m s Degrees, minutes and seconds listed in separate columns S 37 57 9.1288
d.ms Simple DDD.MMSS format -37.57091288
d.dec Listed as a decimal value -37.95253578

The number of decimal places is controlled by the E, N and Height spin buttons in the Decimals panel. For latitudes and longitudes, the E, N decimal value pertains to the number of decimal places of the seconds value; if the latitude/longitude format selected is d.dec, the number of decimals cannot be controlled but is fixed at 8.

File Options

Listing to File - Three file formats (all ASCII text) are available …

  1. Internal - For transfers of data from one Geoida job to another, creating a file with the filename extension INT, and containing a header section showing details of the current job. A Geoida INT file may be imported into another Geoida job using the Import option
  2. Export - For transfer of data to another (external) software application, in simple column format. A number of different filename extensions are possible which indicate the data types contained in the file, such that the first 2 characters represent the horizontal coordinate type and order, and the third character represents the vertical data type. For example, the extension NEG would indicate that the data consists of Northing first, followed by Easting, with Geoidal (orthometric) heights
  3. Report - For creating report-type listings which comprehensively list data for external use, printing, record purposes, etc.

If a listing to a file is required and a file of the indicated name already exists, the following prompt appears to provide the options of over-writing the file, appending to it, or cancelling the list - Eg …

The file Survey.XYZ already exists
Do you wish to overwrite? (Select NO to append to existing)

Click Yes to over-write, No to append to the existing file, or Cancel to abort the listing in the case (eg) that you are uncertain and wish to check the existing file before proceeding. By appending to an existing file a number of times, a file can be constructed containing only selected points.

Note - Output files will be created in the folder indicated by List-Files Location in Preferences and which will be seen in the filename panel adjacent to the File radio button in the List Points window.

The Print button is normally disabled when first entering the List Points / Export option but it becomes enabled when an output file has been created. However, on subsequent occasions when the List Points / Export option is selected, if the Print button is already enabled for a particular file output format, then there is already a file of that name and format created. If the contents of the existing file are known, then it may be printed immediately without the need to list it again.

SEG-P1 Seismic format

The SEG-P1 format is a special-case format available when the File option is set to Export. Particular fixed settings for coordinate type, decimal places etc are required for this format and some controls on the form will thus be disabled or pre-set when SEG-P1 Seismic (*.SEG) is the file-type selected for the output file. On clicking the List / Export button to create the file the following form will be displayed for the entry of header details:

Figure 2: SEG-P1 Export - entry of header details

Click Save and Continue to create the export file. The details specified in the form will be saved to the SEGexport.INI file which will be created in the same folder as the exported SEG-P1 file. If the SEGexport.INI file is present when further SEG-P1 files are exported to the same folder, the saved details will be reloaded into the form. The SEGexport.INI file is a text file and may be edited or copied to other folders if necessary.

Modify Function

List Points also includes the Modify function for editing the details of individual points. List Points' sorting feature (refer above) may be useful when searching for particular points.

There are two methods of opening the Modify Point window …

  1. Select the point from the list by clicking the line on which the point occurs. This will enable the Modify button - click Modify to open the Modify Point window which will display the point in the coordinate type according to the Coordinate System selection in Job Configuration which defines how points are stored in the database
  2. Double-click the line containing the point - this will immediately open the Modify Point window. However, the coordinate type used to display the point may be controlled by double-clicking within a column which displays the coordinate type required. The default coordinate type for the Modify Point window is the setting for Coordinate System in Job Configuration - if you double-click in any column other than that displaying a horizontal coordinate or within a horizontal coordinate column that matches the type set for the job, then the point will be displayed in that type. However, if you double-click within a coordinate column which is not the same as the job setting, then the point will be displayed in that type.

For example, the job's Coordinate System may be set to Grid Projection but you wish to edit the point in terms of the equivalent Latitude/Longitude values - list the points with the Latitude, Longitude check-box crossed; double-click the line for the required point within either the Latitude or the Longitude column, and the Modify Point window will display the point showing the latitude and longitude as converted from the easting/northing values in which the point is stored in the job database

For additional details concerning editing individual points, refer to Interrogate Point.

Point Transformation

If a transformation of the listed or exported data is required, first cross the Transform check-box - this will enable the Select Transformation button and the Log Details check-box and the View Log button will appear; in addition, the List button's caption will be changed to display Transform. Clicking on the Select Transformation button will open the Select Transformation window where a compatible data transformation may be selected.

Figure 3: Setting options to transform job points on export to file

Setting the target coordinate type in the Select Transformation window (when displayed) will determine the coordinate type for export or listing; no conversion between grid and geographic may take place after transforming each point because at that point the details of the target system are no longer known.

IMPORTANT - ALWAYS verify the accuracy and reliability of a transformation before applying to critical data - always test first with points whose coordinates are known in both systems.

Refer to the Transform Job option for details of the Select Transformation window, and to the Definitions menu Transformations option and the Data Transformations - General topic for additional information.
